India's New Task Force Uses Technology To Build Leak-Proof Examination System Nationwide

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has constituted a high-level task force to overhaul the National Testing Agency (NTA) and strengthen India’s examination system following concerns over paper leaks and irregularities. The panel, headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, brings together experts from technology, security, logistics and administration, with the aim of creating a more transparent, secure and reliable examination framework. The task force is expected to submit its recommendations to the government on reforms that can make competitive examinations more secure and minimise the possibility of leaks.

Officials said extensive discussions were held while selecting members for the panel to ensure representation from multiple fields critical to improving the examination process. The biggest strength of the task force lies in the diverse expertise of its members across four key areas — technology, security, logistics and administration. Experts believe that combining knowledge from these domains could help transform the way examinations are conducted in India, from question paper preparation and distribution to candidate verification and result processing.

Nandan Nilekani’s experience in building large-scale digital infrastructure is expected to play a major role in strengthening the technology aspect of the reforms. His work on platforms such as Aadhaar and UPI has involved creating secure digital systems used by millions of people. The task force could explore similar technology-driven solutions for examinations, including encrypted systems for question paper management, secure data handling and advanced methods to prevent unauthorised access. One of the possible areas of focus could be the use of artificial intelligence and biometric verification to improve candidate identification.

Such systems could help detect impersonation attempts and ensure that only registered candidates are allowed to appear for examinations. Strengthening digital security measures could also help protect sensitive examination data from cyber threats. Examination systems involve multiple stages, including printing, transportation, storage and distribution of question papers. Experts from security and logistics backgrounds could help design stronger protocols to prevent leaks and ensure better monitoring at every stage of the process.

Administrative reforms are also expected to be an important part of the task force’s recommendations. A well-coordinated system involving examination authorities, state administrations, security agencies and technology providers could improve accountability and reduce gaps that allow malpractice to occur. The formation of the task force comes amid growing concerns over the integrity of major competitive examinations in India. Allegations of paper leaks and irregularities have led to protests by students and demands for stronger safeguards. The government has maintained that protecting students’ interests and ensuring fairness in examinations remain key priorities.

By bringing together experts from different fields, the task force aims to create a comprehensive roadmap for improving India’s examination ecosystem.
