India’s LPG Imports From US Rise to Record Levels as UAE Supplies Fall

India’s imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States are set to reach a record high in June, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy sourcing pattern amid ongoing disruptions in West Asia.

According to data from commodity tracking firm Kpler, as assessed by NDTV Profit, India has imported about 635,000 tonnes of LPG from the United States so far this month. This accounts for nearly 65 per cent of the country’s total LPG imports, highlighting a sharp rise in dependence on American supply.

The United States has remained India’s largest LPG supplier since March, as geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions in West Asia have altered traditional trade flows. These disruptions have prompted Indian refiners and fuel retailers to diversify procurement sources to maintain stable domestic fuel availability.

In contrast, LPG imports from the United Arab Emirates have fallen significantly to around 90,000 tonnes in June. The UAE, which was previously India’s leading LPG supplier, has seen its share decline as regional instability has impacted export volumes and logistics.

Energy analysts note that the shifting import pattern reflects India’s broader strategy to reduce supply risks by expanding sourcing from multiple global markets. The increased reliance on U.S. cargoes also indicates stronger transcontinental energy trade links, particularly in the liquefied petroleum gas segment.

Officials and market observers say the current trend underscores how global geopolitical developments continue to reshape energy trade routes, with India adapting its import basket to ensure uninterrupted supply for households and commercial users.
