India’s First Indigenous Chip Set for 2025 Launch

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India’s first domestically produced semiconductor chip will be unveiled by September-October 2025, marking a pivotal step toward technological self-reliance. Speaking at the 85th foundation day celebrations of Keshav Memorial Educational Society in Hyderabad on Friday, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s ambition to become a global semiconductor powerhouse, with six fabrication plants already approved and under construction.

Vaishnaw highlighted India’s existing strength in chip design, with cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Gurugram, and Chennai producing some of the world’s most complex chips. The upcoming chip, developed under the Semicon India programme in collaboration with Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), will range between 28 to 90 nanometres, targeting 60% of global demand in sectors like automotive, telecom, and railways. The Dholera facility in Gujarat will be a cornerstone, producing up to 50,000 wafers monthly.

The minister also underscored the India AI Mission, which is training one million people in AI and providing free datasets to foster innovation. He noted that India’s semiconductor market is projected to reach $63 billion by 2026, driven by initiatives like the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), launched in December 2021 with a ₹76,000 crore budget.

Vaishnaw framed India’s rise in the context of a global shift, stating that the “eastern hemisphere” is overtaking Western economic dominance, positioning India to be among the top two economies by 2047. Additional investments, such as ₹334 crore for gallium nitride research at IISc Bengaluru and 18,000 high-performance GPUs for AI development, bolster India’s tech ecosystem.
