India has deployed a 65-member contingent of its armed forces to Russia for the multilateral military exercise ‘Zapad 2025,’ taking place from September 10-16 at the Mulino Training Ground in Nizhniy. The exercise, aimed at boosting military cooperation and interoperability, provides a platform for participating nations to share tactics, techniques, and procedures in conventional warfare and counter-terrorism operations, according to the Indian Ministry of Defence.
The Indian contingent, which departed on Tuesday, comprises 57 Army personnel led by a battalion of the Kumaon Regiment, alongside seven members from the Indian Air Force and one from the Indian Navy. The team will engage in joint company-level operations, focusing on missions in open and plain terrain. These include joint planning, tactical drills, and specialized arms skills, offering a unique opportunity to refine operational capabilities in a multinational combat environment.
“Exercise Zapad 2025 is designed to enhance military cooperation, improve interoperability, and enable participating armies to exchange best practices,” the Ministry of Defence stated. The exercise will also allow Indian forces to integrate emerging technologies, such as advanced communication systems and drones, into their operations, aligning with modern warfare trends. The drills are expected to simulate real-world scenarios, testing the troops’ ability to coordinate effectively under challenging conditions.
