India’s Ambitious Push for a Space Station and Nuclear Power Revolution

PM Modi announces plans for a space station and major nuclear energy expansion by 2047.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address announced transformative initiatives to achieve self-reliance in space and energy sectors. Highlighting India’s space ambitions, Modi revealed plans for the nation to establish its own space station, stating, “We will make our own space station.”

He celebrated the return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla from a space mission and emphasized the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, underscoring the role of over 300 startups and thousands of young innovators driving the sector forward.

Modi also outlined significant reforms in nuclear energy, with work progressing on 10 new nuclear reactors to increase India’s nuclear energy capacity tenfold by 2047. “We are bringing major reforms in the nuclear energy sector,” he said, stressing the need to reduce dependence on imported fuels like petrol, diesel, and gas, which cost billions annually.

He highlighted a 30-fold increase in solar energy capacity over the past 11 years, alongside investments in hydropower through new dams and the Hydrogen Mission, backed by thousands of crores of rupees.

Modi’s address underscored the confidence in India’s youth and the nation’s determination to emerge as a global leader in space and clean energy technologies.
