Indian Navy Chief Discusses Maritime Security With Myanmar Defence Minister
Indian Navy Chief met Myanmar Defence Minister in Naypyidaw, discussing maritime security and defence cooperation.
India’s Chief of the Naval Staff Dinesh K. Tripathi held high-level discussions with Myanmar’s Defence Minister during an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral defence cooperation and enhancing maritime security in the region. The meeting, held in Naypyidaw, focused on reviewing the current state of India–Myanmar defence relations and identifying priority areas for future collaboration amid evolving regional security dynamics.
During the meeting with Myanmar Defence Minister Htun Aung, both sides discussed the broader framework of defence engagement between the two countries. According to official statements shared by the Indian Navy, the talks underscored the strategic importance of India–Myanmar cooperation in maintaining regional stability and ensuring a secure maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific and Bay of Bengal regions.
The discussions also highlighted ongoing defence activities and explored new avenues for collaboration, particularly in maritime domain awareness, operational coordination, and capacity building. Officials described the engagement as forward-looking, reflecting a shared interest in deepening defence ties and improving interoperability between the two navies through structured training and exchange programmes.

As part of his four-day visit to Myanmar, Admiral Tripathi also met senior officials of the Myanmar Navy, including Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing and Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw. These interactions focused on strengthening navy-to-navy cooperation, enhancing joint training initiatives, and expanding operational engagements. The visit also included a ceremonial reception at the Central Naval Command Headquarters in Yangon.
During his engagements at the Naval Training Command, Admiral Tripathi was briefed on Myanmar Navy’s training infrastructure and ongoing collaborative initiatives supported by India. He also formally handed over several India-assisted projects, including a Containerised Small Arms Simulator and a Rigid Inflatable Boat, aimed at improving maritime security capabilities in the region. These initiatives were described as part of India’s broader commitment to capacity building under its regional maritime vision.
The Indian Navy stated that the visit reinforces the longstanding friendship between India and Myanmar, built on mutual trust, respect, and shared strategic interests. Both sides reiterated their commitment to promoting stability and security in the Indian Ocean Region, with continued cooperation in defence training, operational coordination, and maritime security emerging as key pillars of the partnership.
