Indian Embassy in Tehran Tells Nationals to Stay Indoors Amid Escalating Risks

India’s Tehran embassy tells nationals to remain indoors and exercise utmost caution amid rising tensions.

The Embassy of India in Tehran has issued an urgent advisory urging all Indian nationals in Iran to exercise extreme caution and remain indoors wherever possible as the security situation in the region deteriorates following recent military actions involving the United States and Israel. The embassy’s guidance reflects growing concern over potential spill-over effects from escalating tensions and reported explosions in and around Tehran.

In its message, the Indian mission advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel or movement and stay at home unless absolutely essential, emphasising the importance of reducing exposure to situations that could compromise their safety. The advisory also asked Indians to closely monitor local news and official embassy updates for further instructions.

Recent reports indicate that a large number of Indian students and other Indian nationals remain in different parts of Iran during this volatile period. While the embassy has stressed indoor sheltering and vigilance, it has also relocated many Indian students to safer areas outside Tehran as part of precautionary measures to protect them amid the worsening climate.

The advisory follows a series of safety alerts issued by Indian missions across the Middle East — including in Israel, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates — urging citizens to be vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel and follow local authority guidance as regional security dynamics evolve rapidly. The Ministry of External Affairs has activated 24×7 helplines and continues to coordinate with Indian embassies to provide support and assistance to Indians in the area.

India’s diplomatic missions have consistently reiterated the need for nationals to stay in regular contact with embassy officials, register with local missions if not already done, and keep identification and travel documents readily accessible should the situation require more urgent action or evacuation directives.

This advisory comes amid significant geopolitical instability in West Asia, where recent joint military strikes and reprisals have heightened concerns about civilian safety and regional escalation. Indian authorities have repeatedly underlined that ensuring the safety and security of citizens abroad remains a top priority as the situation unfolds.
