India Wins Five Gold Medals at 56th International Physics Olympiad

India wins five gold medals at Physics Olympiad 2026.

India delivered an outstanding performance at the 56th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2026, with all five members of its national team winning gold medals and securing a joint World No. 1 ranking. The prestigious competition was held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, from July 4 to July 12 and brought together more than 380 students representing over 80 countries. India's clean sweep marked one of the country's finest performances in the history of the global science competition.

According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), India's achievement reflects the exceptional standard of preparation and scientific aptitude demonstrated by its participants. Winning five gold medals enabled the country to share the top position in the overall rankings, reinforcing India's growing reputation in international science Olympiads and academic competitions.

The Indian contingent was trained and mentored by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), a national centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR). Operating under the Department of Atomic Energy, HBCSE is responsible for conducting the National Olympiad Programme, which identifies talented students across the country and prepares them for international competitions through rigorous training and evaluation.

The International Physics Olympiad is regarded as one of the world's most prestigious competitions for secondary school students with exceptional aptitude in physics. Participants are tested through challenging theoretical and experimental examinations designed to assess their analytical skills, scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities. The event provides a platform for young scientists from around the world to showcase their talent and exchange knowledge.

India has consistently improved its performance in international science Olympiads over the years, with students regularly securing medals across disciplines such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and astronomy. The latest achievement further strengthens the country's standing in global academic competitions and reflects the effectiveness of its talent identification and training programmes.

The success of the Indian team is expected to encourage more students to pursue careers in science and participate in international Olympiads. Education experts believe such accomplishments not only recognise individual excellence but also inspire greater interest in scientific research and innovation among young learners, contributing to the development of future scientists and researchers in the country.
