India Voices Strong Protest After Oman Vessel Attack Injures 11 Indian Crew Members

India condemns attack after Indians injured

India on Tuesday condemned an attack on a Panama-flagged commercial vessel off the coast of Oman that injured 12 crew members, including 11 Indian nationals, and called for an immediate halt to attacks targeting civilian infrastructure and seafarers. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the incident had affected a vessel carrying a predominantly Indian crew and that the government was closely monitoring the situation. The attack comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding commercial shipping routes in and around the Gulf region, where disruptions can have wider implications for international trade and maritime movement.

Jaiswal said 17 of the vessel’s 19 crew members were Indian nationals. Of the 12 crew members injured in the incident, 11 were Indians, according to the ministry. The details released by India did not immediately establish the nature of the injuries or identify the party responsible for the attack. Authorities were continuing to assess the situation and coordinate information concerning the affected seafarers. The Indian government’s immediate focus was on the safety and welfare of its nationals working aboard the vessel.

In its response, New Delhi urged that attacks on civilian infrastructure and seafarers should cease immediately. India has repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting commercial shipping and ensuring the safety of civilian maritime personnel, particularly as tensions in the wider Middle East have created additional risks for vessels operating through strategically important waterways. Commercial ships carrying goods, fuel and other essential cargo rely on secure maritime routes, and incidents involving civilian vessels can create risks for crews as well as international supply chains.

The incident occurred off Oman, a country located along important maritime routes connecting the Arabian Sea with the Gulf region. Oman’s geographic position gives its waters and surrounding sea lanes significance for international commercial shipping. Any attack or security incident involving a merchant vessel in the area can therefore attract attention beyond the immediate parties involved. For India, the presence of 17 Indian nationals among the 19 crew members made the incident particularly significant, with the government closely following developments involving the injured sailors.

India’s statement also comes against the backdrop of broader concerns over maritime security in the region. Commercial vessels have faced increased security risks in parts of the Middle East amid continuing regional tensions, forcing shipping companies and governments to pay greater attention to routes, vessel protection and crew safety. Such incidents can affect not only individual ships but also the movement of cargo through major maritime corridors. India, which has a large seafaring workforce and depends heavily on maritime trade, has consistently highlighted the need for freedom of navigation and protection of civilian crews.

The government’s condemnation focused on the principle that civilian vessels and seafarers should not be exposed to attacks. With 12 crew members injured, including 11 Indians, the incident has underscored the risks faced by seafarers operating in a volatile maritime environment. Further details about the circumstances of the attack, the condition of those injured and responsibility for the incident were not immediately available from the information released by Indian authorities. New Delhi’s call for an immediate cessation of attacks reflects its broader position that commercial shipping and civilian maritime personnel must be protected from regional conflicts and security threats.
