India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group Meeting Scheduled In Bengaluru In August

Bengaluru will host the upcoming meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG) in August, bringing together space experts and officials from both countries for discussions on bilateral cooperation in the space sector. The meeting will focus on strengthening collaboration between India and the United States in areas related to space technology, research and future joint missions.

Eric Atkins, Public Diplomacy Officer at the US Consulate General, said the CSJWG meeting will include discussions between experts from India and the US during the first week of August. He said the previous meeting was held in February 2025 and highlighted the continued progress in space cooperation between the two nations. The working group serves as a key platform for government agencies and scientists to exchange ideas and develop areas of mutual interest.

Established in 2005, the CSJWG has facilitated regular discussions between officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), other Indian government agencies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and US government bodies. Over the years, the partnership has expanded through several collaborative projects, reflecting the growing strategic importance of space cooperation between the two countries.

India and the US have worked together on major space initiatives, including the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission, which was launched in 2025. Officials have also highlighted recent cooperation through the Axiom 4 space mission, in which Indian astronaut-designate and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla participated. Atkins said there remains significant potential for further collaboration as both countries continue to explore new opportunities in space research and technology.

During a visit to Bengaluru, NASA scientist Swati Mohan, who serves as project manager for AstroNav at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), discussed the achievements of NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover. She said the rover has exceeded its original mission timeline and continues to perform successfully while collecting samples that could provide insights into the history of life on Mars.

Mohan also highlighted recent scientific developments from the mission, including the collection of 33 samples from Cheyava Falls on Mars, which have shown possible signs linked to past biological activity on the planet. She also noted that NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter has completed more than 70 flights since 2021, demonstrating the success of advanced space exploration technology. The upcoming CSJWG meeting is expected to further strengthen the long-standing space partnership between India and the United States.
