India-Russia Plan Advanced BrahMos Missiles with Extended Range During Summit
India and Russia discuss next-gen BrahMos missiles with longer range and lighter versions during Putin’s Delhi visit.
India and Russia are reportedly exploring the development of advanced BrahMos missile variants during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi. Defence officials cited by ANI indicated that both nations see a growing need for lighter versions of the BrahMos NG, the next-generation missile yet to be inducted, designed for compatibility with a wider range of fighter aircraft.
Officials also pointed to potential talks on extended-range versions capable of striking targets beyond 400 km. While the original BrahMos series was limited to approximately 290 km due to export-control regulations, upgraded ship- and land-based versions have already extended the range to 450-500 km, reflecting the evolving strategic requirements of both nations.
The discussions coincide with India’s efforts to expand its missile export footprint. Following a landmark BrahMos deal with the Philippines, New Delhi is reportedly close to finalising another agreement with Vietnam, signaling growing demand for India’s advanced missile systems in the region.

In addition to BrahMos upgrades, reports suggest that India and Russia are engaging on hypersonic technology and longer-range air-to-air missile systems. These initiatives reflect a broader push for modernising defence capabilities and strengthening strategic ties between the two countries.
In their joint statements after the 23rd India-Russia annual summit, President Putin emphasized independent foreign policy collaboration within forums like BRICS and SCO, while PM Narendra Modi highlighted the enduring nature of India-Russia friendship, calling it a “pole star” amidst global challenges over the past eight decades.
The potential development of next-generation BrahMos variants underscores the deepening defence and technological partnership between India and Russia, aligning strategic modernization with expanding defence exports and regional security priorities.
