India Raises Concerns Over Hormuz Attacks, Backs Gaza Two-State Solution

India has expressed serious concern over the worsening security situation in West Asia, urging immediate de-escalation while strongly condemning recent attacks on commercial maritime vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Addressing a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) open debate on the Middle East, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said the renewed violence and growing instability in the region were deeply troubling. He emphasised that ensuring maritime security and preventing further escalation remain critical for regional and global stability.

Speaking before the Security Council, Harish described the recent resumption of hostilities across West Asia as "deeply concerning" and called on all parties to exercise restraint. He stressed that continued violence threatens civilian lives, regional peace and the safety of key international trade routes. India also reiterated its condemnation of attacks targeting maritime vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important shipping corridors for global energy supplies and international commerce.

Highlighting India's longstanding ties with the region, Harish described West Asia as an area of "immense importance" for the country. He noted that millions of Indian nationals live and work across the region, while India's energy security, trade and economic interests are closely linked to peace and stability there. He underlined that any prolonged conflict or disruption in maritime routes could have wider economic and humanitarian consequences beyond the region.

On the Israel-Gaza conflict, India reaffirmed its consistent support for a negotiated two-state solution. The Indian representative reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine living side by side with Israel in peace and security within recognised and mutually agreed borders. India maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path to resolving the long-running conflict.

India also emphasised the importance of protecting civilians, respecting international humanitarian law and ensuring unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations. The country has repeatedly called for restraint from all sides and supported international efforts aimed at reducing tensions, facilitating aid and encouraging diplomatic engagement to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the wider region.

The remarks at the UNSC reflect India's broader diplomatic approach of balancing support for regional stability, maritime security and peaceful conflict resolution. As tensions continue across West Asia, India has reiterated its commitment to dialogue, de-escalation and international cooperation while backing a two-state solution as the foundation for achieving a durable and comprehensive peace between Israel and Palestine.
