India Post Pilots Drone Deliveries To Reach Remote Communities In Himachal Pradesh And Assam
India Post begins drone delivery trials.
India Post has launched a pilot project to test drone-based last-mile delivery in Himachal Pradesh, marking a significant shift in how postal bags could be transported across difficult terrain. The initiative is aimed at improving connectivity between post offices in geographically challenging regions where conventional delivery methods can be slow and difficult. Once fully operational, the proposed drone network is expected to cover 110 routes in Himachal Pradesh and another 40 routes in Assam, potentially providing faster access to remote areas.
The first operational route under the pilot is between Mandi Head Post Office and Rehardhar Branch Post Office in Himachal Pradesh. The route covers approximately 12 kilometres through mountainous terrain. A conventional journey along the stretch can take more than two hours, particularly because of the difficult geography and road connectivity. Using a drone, however, the same postal consignment completed the journey in around seven minutes. The drone subsequently landed at the Rehardhar Branch Post Office, where postal officials received the delivery.
The demonstration was carried out around Independence Day and was linked to the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. A Tiranga parcel transported by the drone was received by postal officials and subsequently handed over to an Army veteran. The delivery provided a symbolic element to the technology demonstration while highlighting how emerging logistics systems could be integrated into routine postal operations. India Post's move is intended to examine whether drones can complement existing delivery infrastructure rather than replace conventional postal personnel.

The drones being tested can carry postal bags weighing up to 10 kilograms and are designed to operate across routes ranging from around five kilometres to more than 80 kilometres. Their ability to be tracked in real time is another feature being assessed as part of the pilot. Such capabilities could help postal authorities monitor consignments during transit and improve visibility over deliveries, particularly in locations where road-based transportation can be affected by terrain, weather or limited connectivity.
The proposed network has particular significance for Himachal Pradesh and Assam, where mountains, rivers, forests and other geographical barriers can make conventional transportation time-consuming. By travelling directly between designated points, drones can potentially bypass stretches of difficult terrain and reduce delivery times. For postal authorities, the technology could provide another option for moving mail between head offices and branch offices in areas where conventional transport requires considerably longer journeys.
The pilot represents an effort by India Post to explore new technologies for strengthening last-mile connectivity while retaining its extensive network of post offices. The proposed 150-route network across Himachal Pradesh and Assam will depend on the outcome of the ongoing trials, including operational reliability, safety, payload capacity and the practicality of regular drone flights. If the technology proves effective, drone-based transportation could eventually help India Post deliver postal consignments more quickly to some of the country's most difficult-to-reach locations.
