India Opens Government Power Sector Tenders To Four Chinese-Backed Companies
India allows participation of four Chinese-backed firms in power sector tenders.
India has allowed four Chinese-affiliated power equipment manufacturers with domestic production facilities to compete for government power transmission contracts under a two-year exemption, according to reports. The decision comes as the country accelerates expansion of its electricity transmission network to meet rising power demand and integrate growing renewable energy capacity.
The companies reportedly permitted under the temporary relaxation include TBEA Energy, Nanjing Electric India, New Northeast Electric India, and Taikai Electric (India). These firms, though linked to Chinese parent groups, operate manufacturing bases in India and will now be eligible to participate in public sector tenders for critical power infrastructure projects.
According to reports, the exemption was requested by India’s power ministry in January to address equipment shortages in ongoing and upcoming transmission projects. The approval is intended to support faster development of the national grid, which is under pressure due to increasing electricity consumption and the rapid addition of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Officials have clarified that the exemption is strictly time-bound and will remain valid for two years from the date of issuance. It is also not intended to serve as a precedent for other companies seeking similar relaxations. The move reflects a targeted approach aimed at balancing infrastructure needs with existing policy sensitivities around Chinese participation in strategic sectors.
India’s stance on Chinese firms has remained cautious since the 2020 Galwan Valley border clash, after which restrictions increased through app bans, investment screening, and tighter procurement rules. However, trade between the two countries has continued to grow, and recent years have seen a gradual easing in some areas as diplomatic engagement resumed. The latest exemption is seen as part of this calibrated approach, prioritising infrastructure development while maintaining strategic oversight.
