India is World's Largest Milk Producer; Sets 300 Million Ton Target
India Leads Global Milk Production, Aims for 300 Million Tons by 2030
India has solidified its position as the world’s top milk producer, churning out 239 million metric tons (MMT) annually, Union Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh announced in the Lok Sabha today.
With an ambitious target of 300 MMT within five years, Singh credited the Modi government’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), launched in 2014, for a 63.5% production surge over the past decade. He projected a further 15% rise by 2028.
Speaking during a parliamentary session, Singh highlighted the dairy sector’s socio-economic impact, noting that 10 crore people—75% of them women—are engaged in milk production. “Our per capita milk consumption stands at 471 grams,” he said, underscoring India’s growing dairy footprint.
The RGM, revamped for 2021-2026, drives this growth by conserving indigenous breeds, upgrading bovine genetics, and boosting productivity through advanced technologies.
Key initiatives include expanding artificial insemination networks to farmers’ doorsteps and promoting high-genetic-merit bulls for breeding. The mission also champions sustainable indigenous cattle and buffalo rearing, aligning with national goals to make dairying more profitable.
With India outpacing global peers, Singh’s vision positions the country as a dairy powerhouse, blending tradition with innovation to feed millions and empower rural livelihoods.
