India Hits Record Peak Power Demand Of Over 257 GW On May 18

India records highest-ever peak power demand of 257 GW.

India’s electricity system recorded a new milestone on Monday as peak power demand surged to an all-time high of 257.37 GW, driven primarily by intense heatwave conditions and increased use of cooling appliances across the country.According to data from the Power Ministry, the peak demand was reached at 15:42 hours on May 18 and was fully met by the national grid. This marks a slight increase over the previous record of 256.11 GW, registered on April 25, 2026, highlighting a sustained upward trend in electricity consumption during the ongoing summer season.

The sharp rise in demand has been attributed largely to extreme temperatures across northern and central India, where daytime highs have consistently approached or exceeded 45 degrees Celsius. In several regions, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi, prolonged heatwave conditions have significantly increased the use of air conditioners, desert coolers, and other cooling systems, placing additional pressure on the power infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heatwave conditions in multiple parts of northwest and central India, with severe spells expected in Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.

Cities such as Bhatinda in Punjab recorded temperatures as high as 47 degrees Celsius, while parts of Haryana and Rajasthan also crossed 46 degrees, underscoring the severity of the ongoing weather pattern. In Delhi, temperatures hovered around 44 degrees Celsius, with residents experiencing persistent dry winds and harsh daytime conditions. Meteorologists have warned that there may be little immediate relief, with the heatwave expected to persist through the week, further increasing electricity demand in urban areas.

Power sector experts note that India’s electricity consumption typically rises sharply during summer months, but the intensity of this year’s demand reflects both prolonged heat conditions and structural growth in appliance usage. The government has projected that peak demand could reach up to 270 GW this summer, compared to 242.77 GW recorded last year, indicating continued strain on generation and distribution systems as the season progresses.
