India Conducts Successful Agni Missile Test With MIRV Technology From Odisha

India successfully tests Agni missile with MIRV capability, enabling multiple-target strike in one launch.

India successfully carried out a flight test of an advanced Agni-series missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology on May 8, marking a significant step in strengthening its strategic defence capabilities. The test was conducted from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island and was overseen by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The missile system is designed to carry multiple warheads that can be directed to separate targets in a single launch, significantly enhancing strike capability and strategic deterrence. According to officials, the system successfully demonstrated its ability to release multiple payloads that were targeted at different locations spread across a wide geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region during the trial.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (Defence Research and Development Organisation) stated that all mission objectives were achieved during the test. The flight was closely monitored through a network of ground-based and ship-based tracking stations, which recorded the missile’s trajectory from launch to the impact of all payloads, confirming full mission success.

The Agni missile equipped with MIRV capability represents a major technological advancement, as it allows a single missile to engage multiple strategic targets simultaneously. Defence officials said the system has been developed by DRDO laboratories in collaboration with Indian industry partners, reflecting growing domestic capability in advanced missile systems.

Senior scientists from DRDO and personnel from the Indian Army witnessed the test, which was described as a key milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to modernise its strategic defence forces. The successful trial is expected to significantly enhance India’s deterrence posture amid evolving regional and global security challenges. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces, and industry partners for the achievement, stating that the successful demonstration of MIRV capability would further strengthen India’s defence preparedness and technological edge.
