India Becomes Fifth Largest Defence Spender As Global Military Expenditure Increases

India rises to fifth position among the world’s largest defence spenders.

India has emerged as the world’s fifth-largest defence spender as global military expenditure continues to rise sharply amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, according to recent international defence spending assessments. The ranking places India behind only the United States, China, Russia, and Germany in overall military outlay.

Global military expenditure has seen sustained growth for over a decade, driven by conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, and heightened security concerns across Asia. The latest data from defence research institutions shows that worldwide spending has reached record levels, reflecting a broader trend of accelerated military modernization and arms procurement by major economies.

India’s position in the top five is based on its consistent increase in defence allocation over recent years. In 2024, India’s military expenditure was estimated at around $86 billion, accounting for a significant share of global defence spending. The country’s spending reflects its focus on modernising armed forces, strengthening border infrastructure, and expanding indigenous defence manufacturing under the “Make in India” initiative.

Despite its high ranking, India’s defence budget remains significantly lower than that of the top three global spenders. The United States continues to lead by a wide margin, followed by China and Russia, whose military expenditures are substantially higher due to large-scale strategic programmes and ongoing military engagements.

Analysts note that India’s steady rise in defence spending is closely linked to regional security dynamics, particularly tensions along its borders and evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. The country also remains one of the world’s largest arms importers, although it has increasingly pushed for domestic production to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

The overall rise in global military spending highlights a sustained shift toward higher defence preparedness across regions. Experts caution that while increased expenditure may strengthen military capabilities, it also reflects deepening geopolitical instability that continues to drive global arms accumulation.
