India, Australia Push Forward on Comprehensive Trade Pact
Talks cover goods, services, digital trade and more as partners eye early conclusion of CECA
India and Australia wrapped up the 11th round of talks on Saturday aimed at finalising a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), signalling momentum toward a full-fledged free trade pact.
The latest negotiations, held in New Delhi from August 18–23, built upon the interim trade deal both nations implemented in December 2022. Officials said discussions spanned a wide spectrum — from goods, services and mobility to digital trade, rules of origin, labour, gender, and environmental standards.
According to the Commerce Ministry, the talks brought “greater understanding for convergence” in several pending provisions. To maintain progress, both sides have agreed to continue discussions through virtual intersessions.

The ministry added: “With shared ambition and mutual understanding to work towards a future-ready framework, India and Australia remain strongly aligned to the early conclusion of a mutually beneficial CECA.”
The pact, once finalised, is expected to significantly expand bilateral trade, streamline rules, and open new avenues for cooperation in sectors such as technology, education, and renewable energy.
