India Appoints Vipul As Next Ambassador To Saudi Arabia
India strengthens Gulf diplomacy with key Saudi Arabia envoy appointment.
India has appointed veteran diplomat Vipul, a 1998-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as the next Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, marking a significant diplomatic posting at a time of heightened geopolitical activity in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the appointment, stating that he is expected to assume charge shortly. The move comes as India continues to strengthen its strategic engagement with key Gulf partners amid shifting regional dynamics.
Vipul is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Qatar, a position he has held since August 2023. His transition to Riyadh is seen as a continuation of his extensive diplomatic engagement in the Gulf region, where he has built deep familiarity with political, economic, and security developments. His experience is expected to be crucial in managing India’s expanding relationship with Saudi Arabia, one of its most important energy and investment partners.
Over the course of his diplomatic career, Vipul has held multiple significant postings across Indian missions abroad, including assignments in Cairo, Colombo, Geneva, and Dubai. His portfolio has spanned a wide range of responsibilities, covering political and commercial relations, development cooperation, disarmament issues, international security, and media affairs. These diverse roles have contributed to his reputation as a well-rounded diplomat with strong regional expertise.

In addition to his overseas postings, Vipul has also played an important role in policy formulation at the MEA headquarters in New Delhi. He served as Joint Secretary in the ministry between 2014 and 2017, followed by his appointment as Consul General of India in Dubai from 2017 to 2020. He later returned to the ministry as Joint Secretary (Gulf), a position he held from 2020 to 2023, further deepening his specialization in West Asian affairs.
Vipul’s academic background also adds to his profile as a seasoned diplomat. Before joining the foreign service, he completed a degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in 1994 and later earned an MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. His blend of technical education and diplomatic experience has been viewed as an asset in handling complex international negotiations and policy discussions.
His appointment to Saudi Arabia comes at a crucial time as India seeks to enhance its strategic partnership with Riyadh. The bilateral relationship has evolved significantly in recent years, expanding beyond traditional energy trade into broader cooperation in investment, defence, and regional security. With both countries navigating an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, Vipul’s extensive Gulf experience is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s interests in the region.
