India And Slovakia Elevate Ties To Comprehensive Partnership During PM Modi Visit

India Slovakia upgrade ties, deepen tech and trade cooperation.

India and Slovakia on Monday elevated their bilateral relations to a “Comprehensive Partnership” during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Bratislava, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Central European nation. The announcement came after delegation-level talks between PM Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, followed by a joint press statement.

Prime Minister Modi described the upgrade in ties as a reflection of “shared trust, shared priorities and a shared vision for the future.” He expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Fico’s role in strengthening bilateral relations and said the meeting marked a “historic moment” in India-Slovakia diplomatic engagement. The Slovak leadership’s support was also acknowledged in advancing discussions on the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement.

During the talks, both leaders reviewed progress in trade and economic cooperation and identified key sectors for future collaboration. These include automobiles, railways, advanced manufacturing, and green technologies. PM Modi noted that while current trade levels are encouraging, both nations see significant untapped potential that can be unlocked through deeper economic integration and policy cooperation.

Technology emerged as a central pillar of the upgraded partnership. The two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on digital technology cooperation, aimed at expanding collaboration in digital public infrastructure and innovation ecosystems. PM Modi also welcomed the establishment of an India Chair on Artificial Intelligence at a Slovak university, describing AI as a tool that must be rooted in “trust, responsibility, and human dignity.”

The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in the space sector, recalling that Slovakia’s first satellite was launched by India in 2017. PM Modi invited Slovak companies to participate in India’s rapidly growing space industry, which has been expanding through increased private sector involvement and technological advancement.

The elevation of ties comes at a time when India is strengthening its engagement with Europe through both bilateral partnerships and broader trade negotiations. The new “Comprehensive Partnership” framework is expected to enhance cooperation across strategic, technological, and economic areas, further deepening India-Slovakia relations in the coming years.
