India And Oman Discuss Cooperation In Energy, SAF And Security

Both countries see scope for deeper cooperation across key sectors.

India and Oman have significant scope to strengthen cooperation in energy, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and security, Oman's Ambassador to India, Issa Saleh Abdullah Al Shibani, said on Monday. Speaking to IANS on the sidelines of the Second India SAF Conclave and Awards 2026 in New Delhi, Al Shibani said the two neighbouring countries were well placed to expand engagement in areas of mutual importance.

The Ambassador highlighted energy, SAF and security as key sectors where India and Oman could work more closely. He noted that the two countries share geographical proximity and airspace, creating opportunities for deeper cooperation. Al Shibani said greater engagement could help both sides explore additional areas of collaboration while strengthening their broader bilateral partnership.

Climate and clean-energy goals were also discussed during the interaction. Al Shibani noted that Oman has set a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while India has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2070. He expressed confidence that both countries were making progress towards their respective environmental targets and could support each other in advancing clean-energy initiatives.

The remarks came as sustainable aviation fuel gains greater attention as an option for reducing carbon emissions from the aviation sector. SAF can be produced from various renewable and waste-based sources and is being considered by countries and the aviation industry as part of broader efforts to reduce emissions. The development of domestic production capacity and supporting infrastructure remains an important part of building a sustainable SAF ecosystem.

Sweden's Ambassador to India Petra Menander, speaking about sectors that could drive greater bilateral economic exchange, pointed to technology, innovation and the green transition. She identified artificial intelligence, connectivity, telecommunications, mining and life sciences as areas where both countries have strengths. Jimmy Olsson, President of the SAF Association and Chairman and Managing Director of ZR2 Group, meanwhile, said India should develop its own approach to SAF rather than simply replicating models used in other countries.
