India And New Zealand Sign Agreements Across Defence, Trade And Technology Sectors

India New Zealand sign deals across strategic sectors.

India and New Zealand have elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, signing 10 agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across defence, trade, maritime security, agriculture, innovation and people-to-people connections. The agreements were announced following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to New Zealand, where he held delegation-level talks with his New Zealand counterpart Christopher Luxon in Auckland on Saturday. The two leaders endorsed the India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership: Roadmap to 2030, a framework designed to guide cooperation between the two countries over the coming years.

The roadmap focuses on strengthening economic ties, enhancing security collaboration, encouraging innovation partnerships and expanding exchanges between citizens of both nations. Prime Minister Modi described the development as a "turning point" in bilateral relations, saying the upgraded partnership represented more than a diplomatic milestone and reflected a shared commitment towards future cooperation. Among the key areas covered by the agreements was defence and security cooperation. The two sides signed a Memorandum of Arrangement on maritime cooperation between India's Ministry of Defence and the New Zealand Defence Force.

The agreement is expected to improve coordination in maritime security, information sharing and defence engagement, particularly at a time when both countries are seeking greater collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region. The agreements also aim to strengthen economic and trade relations between India and New Zealand. Both countries have expressed interest in expanding business opportunities, improving market access and encouraging investments in sectors with mutual potential. The partnership framework highlights the importance of resilient supply chains, innovation-driven growth and deeper commercial engagement between the two economies.

Agriculture emerged as another important area of cooperation under the new roadmap. India and New Zealand have significant expertise in farming, dairy production, food technology and sustainable agricultural practices. The two nations are expected to explore opportunities for knowledge sharing, research collaboration and technology exchange to improve productivity and strengthen food security. The strategic partnership also places emphasis on innovation, science and technology cooperation. Both countries have identified opportunities to work together in emerging sectors, including research, digital technologies and entrepreneurship.

Enhanced collaboration in these areas is expected to support startups, academic institutions and businesses while creating new avenues for joint development. Tourism and people-to-people ties were also included among the priority areas. India and New Zealand share longstanding cultural and educational connections, with a large Indian-origin community contributing to social and economic links between the two countries. The roadmap seeks to further encourage tourism, student exchanges, cultural programmes and closer interaction between citizens. The 10 agreements signed during the visit reflect a broader effort by both nations to deepen their engagement beyond traditional diplomatic ties.

While India and New Zealand have maintained friendly relations for decades, the upgrade to a Strategic Partnership signals a more structured approach to cooperation across multiple sectors. The new framework comes amid growing interest in stronger partnerships within the Indo-Pacific region, where both countries have shared concerns regarding maritime security and regional stability. With the Roadmap to 2030 serving as a guide, India and New Zealand are expected to focus on implementing the agreements and expanding collaboration in areas that support economic growth, security and long-term bilateral ties.
