India And Japan Seek Stronger Economic Resilience Through Strategic Summit
Summit prioritises economic security, resilient supply chains and clean energy.
Economic security, resilient supply chains and clean energy cooperation are expected to dominate discussions during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi visits India from July 1 to July 3. The visit, her first official trip to India since assuming office, comes at a time when both countries are seeking to strengthen cooperation in critical technologies, reduce strategic vulnerabilities and deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Takaichi are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on July 2, during which they will review the progress of bilateral ties and exchange views on key regional and global developments.
A major outcome anticipated from the summit is the adoption of a joint declaration on economic security, reflecting the shared commitment of India and Japan to build trusted and resilient supply chains amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty. According to sources, the declaration is expected to establish a stronger framework for bilateral consultations during emergencies through the existing India-Japan economic security dialogue. The initiative is aimed at improving coordination in areas considered critical to national and economic security, while reducing dependence on vulnerable global supply networks disrupted by geopolitical conflicts and market uncertainties.
The two leaders are also expected to expand cooperation across several strategic sectors that have emerged as priorities for both countries. These include semiconductors, critical minerals such as rare earth elements, clean energy technologies, pharmaceuticals and medical goods. Strengthening collaboration in these sectors is expected to support efforts by both governments to diversify supply chains, encourage technology partnerships and promote secure access to essential industrial resources. The summit is also likely to reinforce ongoing initiatives to increase investment, innovation and manufacturing cooperation under the broader India-Japan strategic partnership.

Clean energy is set to feature prominently on the summit agenda, with India and Japan expected to announce a new framework to promote biogas-powered mobility. The proposed initiative aligns with India's objective of enhancing energy security by reducing dependence on imported crude oil while encouraging the use of cleaner and more sustainable transportation fuels. Japanese automobile manufacturer Suzuki Motor has already begun producing biogas in India, and both governments are expected to explore opportunities to expand collaboration in renewable fuels, green mobility and low-carbon technologies. The initiative also complements India's broader clean energy transition and climate goals.
The upcoming summit follows Prime Minister Modi's visit to Tokyo for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in August 2025 and is expected to further strengthen one of India's most significant strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. Beyond economic security and clean energy, discussions are also likely to cover regional stability, connectivity, infrastructure development and emerging global challenges. As both countries seek to enhance resilience against supply chain disruptions and technological dependencies, the summit is expected to produce agreements that reinforce long-term cooperation in trade, innovation, energy security and strategic coordination across multiple sectors.
