India And Australia Deepen Maritime And Defence Cooperation In Indo-Pacific

India and Australia expand defence cooperation and maritime security ties.

India and Australia have reaffirmed their expanding strategic and defence partnership, agreeing to deepen military cooperation, strengthen maritime security coordination, and enhance collaboration in the defence industry, according to a report. The discussions come as both countries continue to align their strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific region amid evolving regional security dynamics.

The developments were reviewed during the 10th Defence Policy Talks held in New Delhi on May 8. The meeting was led by Joint Secretary for International Cooperation in the Ministry of Defence Amitabh Prasad and Australia’s First Assistant Secretary for International Policy Bernard Philip. According to The Australia Today, the talks assessed progress under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.

Officials from both sides welcomed the growing defence engagement, including plans to institutionalise an annual India-Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue starting in 2025. The report noted that this reflects increasing trust and convergence of strategic interests between New Delhi and Canberra, particularly in the context of shared concerns over regional stability and maritime security.

A key focus of the discussions was enhancing interoperability between the armed forces, expanding the scope and complexity of joint military exercises, and strengthening cooperation in maritime security operations. Both countries also emphasised the importance of coordinated responses to emerging security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, where strategic competition has been intensifying.

The two sides reviewed progress on commitments made during the 2024 India-Australia Annual Leaders’ Summit, including efforts to update the Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation and develop a Joint Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap. Plans were also confirmed for the first India-Australia Joint Staff Talks later this year, aimed at further institutionalising defence engagement.

Training exchanges and defence industry cooperation were also highlighted as key pillars of the partnership. Initiatives such as the Gen Bipin Rawat Memorial Young Officers Exchange Programme, military academy exchanges, and recent defence industry roundtables were noted as strengthening professional ties, building mutual trust, and advancing long-term strategic understanding between the two countries.
