India Accelerates Heron MK-II Drone Acquisition and Local Production After Operation Sindoor
India fast-tracks procurement of Israeli Heron MK-II drones to boost surveillance.
In response to heightened security needs following Operation Sindoor, India has initiated the procurement of additional Israeli-made Heron MK-II drones under emergency provisions. The decision marks a significant upgrade in India's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities, involving all three branches of the armed forces, including the Indian Navy for the first time. Discussions are also underway to manufacture the Heron MK-II in India, potentially enabling full technology transfer and strengthening the Make in India defence initiative.
Developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the Heron MK-II is a medium-altitude long-endurance UAV with a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 kg. It offers an endurance of up to 45 hours, operates at altitudes as high as 35,000 feet, and reaches speeds of 150 knots. These capabilities make it well-suited for long-range surveillance missions along India's borders with China and Pakistan, where it has already proven its effectiveness.
Initial procurement began in 2021 under emergency powers, following tension along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, with four drones ordered—two each for the Army and Air Force. Now, the Navy has also joined other forces in seeking this advanced system, though exact quantities remain undisclosed. Local partners like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Elcom are expected to facilitate the domestic production of the drones, aligning with IAI’s efforts to meet Indigenous Content standards, which require 60% local manufacturing for upcoming UAV contracts.

Alongside new acquisitions, India is progressing with Project Cheetah to upgrade the existing Heron drone fleet’s surveillance and combat capabilities. These developments underscore India’s strategic emphasis on enhancing UAV technology for extended, high-altitude surveillance to bolster national security.
