IMD Predicts Widespread Rain, Thunderstorms Across India on Tuesday

India is expected to experience another day of active monsoon conditions on Tuesday, August 11, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting widespread rainfall across several regions. Heavy to very heavy showers are possible in parts of northern, central, eastern and western India, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and occasional intense spells.

The monsoon trough remains active and positioned south of its usual location, while a low-pressure area over northern Madhya Pradesh and neighbouring regions continues to influence central India. A cyclonic circulation over the northwestern Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into another low-pressure area around August 12, potentially sustaining rainfall across eastern and central India.

Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rain, with isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms possible. Uttarakhand is also expected to experience widespread rainfall, while Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and adjoining areas could remain under an extended wet spell. Isolated very heavy rain is possible in eastern Rajasthan.

The low-pressure system over Madhya Pradesh is expected to drive widespread rainfall across central India. Western and eastern Madhya Pradesh could receive heavy to very heavy showers, while Chhattisgarh may experience thunderstorms, lightning and locally intense rain. Short periods of concentrated rainfall could cause waterlogging and disrupt road travel in vulnerable locations.

Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to remain wet, with heavy rainfall likely in parts of Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal. Bihar and Jharkhand could experience thunderstorms and lightning, while rainfall may intensify over the following days. Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh are also likely to receive scattered showers, including isolated heavy rain.

Widespread rainfall is forecast across Konkan and Goa, while Gujarat and Madhya Maharashtra could receive heavy showers. Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep are expected to see continuing rain accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and strong surface winds. The active monsoon systems are likely to keep weather conditions wet and unsettled across much of the country.
