IMD Issues Yellow Alert for All 11 Vidarbha Districts
IMD forecasts moderate rainfall across Vidarbha for five days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a yellow alert for all 11 districts of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, predicting moderate rainfall from September 25 to 29. The alert, issued by IMD’s Nagpur regional centre, covers Nagpur, Buldhana, Amravati, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Akola, Yavatmal, Washim, and Chandrapur, with an orange alert specifically for Chandrapur and Yavatmal on Thursday, signaling the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. As the region prepares for wet weather, residents are urged to stay vigilant for potential disruptions.
The IMD forecasts moderate rainfall at a few places in Yavatmal and isolated areas in Wardha, while light rainfall is expected in parts of Nagpur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Amravati over the next few hours. Adding to the concerns, the weather department has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in isolated areas of Gondia, as well as gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph in Yavatmal, Chandrapur, Nagpur, Wardha, and Amravati. These conditions could pose challenges for commuters, farmers, and local infrastructure in the region.
The yellow alert indicates moderate to heavy rainfall, which may lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and minor damage to crops in Vidarbha, a region known for its agricultural significance. The orange alert for Chandrapur and Yavatmal underscores a higher risk of intense downpours, raising concerns about flash flooding and road safety. Local authorities have been advised to monitor low-lying areas and ensure drainage systems are functional to mitigate potential impacts.

Vidarbha’s weather patterns are influenced by a combination of monsoon remnants and localized low-pressure systems, according to IMD officials. The current forecast is driven by a cyclonic circulation over central India, which is expected to sustain rainy conditions for the next five days. “Residents should prepare for intermittent showers and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain spells,” an IMD spokesperson said. Farmers, in particular, are being cautioned to protect crops like cotton and soybeans, which are vulnerable to excessive moisture at this stage.
The IMD’s alert has prompted local administrations to take proactive measures. In Nagpur, civic authorities are clearing drains to prevent waterlogging, while in rural districts like Yavatmal and Chandrapur, disaster response teams are on standby. The forecast of gusty winds and lightning has also raised concerns about power outages and damage to temporary structures, prompting officials to issue safety advisories for residents in vulnerable areas.
For Vidarbha’s residents, the five-day alert signals a need for preparedness. “We’re stocking up on essentials and ensuring our homes are ready for the rain,” said Priya Deshmukh, a Nagpur resident. The region, which has faced erratic rainfall patterns in recent years, is no stranger to weather-related challenges, but the intensity of the forecast has put communities on edge. As Vidarbha braces for a wet week, the IMD continues to monitor the situation, with updates expected to guide residents through the turbulent weather ahead.
