IMD Issues Yellow Alert as Kerala Braces for Heavy Rain, Floods
Heavy downpours threaten 10 districts with floods and winds.
Kerala is grappling with a dramatic weather crisis as heavy rains batter the state, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a yellow alert for 10 districts on Tuesday. Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are bracing for intense downpours, with strong winds already causing widespread disruption. The relentless rain, which began intensifying on Monday, has led to flooding, uprooted trees, and chaotic traffic snarls across the region, leaving residents on edge.
The IMD has linked the current deluge to an intensified low-pressure system over the southeast Arabian Sea, which could escalate into a depression within the next 48 hours. This system is fueling the early onset of the northeast monsoon, expected to bring even heavier rainfall to Kerala’s coastal and hilly areas. On Monday, the state witnessed intermittent downpours that inundated low-lying regions, with emergency teams working overtime to clear debris and assist stranded commuters.
Adding to the concern, the IMD has forecasted the formation of another low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, likely to bring light to moderate rains to parts of Odisha over the next three days. For Kerala, the situation remains critical, with authorities urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Schools and colleges in the affected districts may face closures as the state prepares for potential flash floods and landslides, especially in vulnerable hilly terrains like Idukki and Wayanad.

Local officials have deployed disaster response teams to monitor the situation, with special attention to drainage systems clogged by the recent rains. Fishermen have been advised to stay off the seas due to hazardous conditions, while power outages have been reported in several areas due to fallen trees damaging electrical lines. The IMD’s warning underscores the need for heightened preparedness as Kerala navigates this challenging weather spell, with the coming days likely to test the state’s resilience against nature’s fury.
