IMD Issues 3-Hour Red Alert For Delhi Amid Heavy Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department issued a three-hour red alert for Delhi on Friday as heavy rainfall continued across the national capital and neighbouring areas. Persistent showers disrupted road traffic and increased the likelihood of congestion during office hours, while widespread waterlogging created serious commuting difficulties in parts of Gurugram.

During the preceding 24 hours, Delhi’s primary weather observatory at Safdarjung recorded 59.2 mm of rain. The Lodi Road station received 60.4 mm, while the Ridge observatory registered 57 mm. The rainfall left several roads and low-lying areas vulnerable to water accumulation, slowing traffic movement across parts of the city.

Rainfall was comparatively lighter elsewhere in the National Capital Region. Gurugram recorded 11.5 mm, while Ghaziabad received 11 mm at Kamla Nehru Nagar and 8 mm at Hindon. Despite the lower recorded total, Gurugram continued to struggle with waterlogging caused by heavy showers on Thursday, particularly in densely developed urban areas.

Residents across Delhi-NCR woke to another spell of rain on Friday, August 7. Alongside the short-duration red alert for Delhi, the IMD issued a yellow alert indicating continued rainfall across the wider region. More rain and thunderstorms were forecast for Gurugram during the day, raising concern that existing waterlogging could worsen before drainage systems cleared accumulated water.

Heavy rain affected traffic flow and caused delays during the morning commute, with flooded stretches forcing vehicles to move slowly. Commuters were advised to allow additional travel time and remain cautious on waterlogged roads. Continued rainfall could also affect visibility and conceal potholes, open drains or other hazards beneath standing water.

The showers provided some relief from humid weather but highlighted recurring drainage and mobility problems across the region. Authorities were expected to monitor vulnerable roads, underpasses and low-lying neighbourhoods while responding to complaints. Residents were advised to follow updated weather alerts and traffic advisories because conditions could change quickly during thunderstorms and intense spells of rain.
