IMD Forecasts Heavy Showers and Gusty Winds Across Karnataka This Week

IMD issues heavy rain alert for Bengaluru and six districts with winds reaching 50-60 km/h through May 24.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intensified pre-monsoon activity across large parts of Karnataka over the next several days, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds expected in Bengaluru and multiple interior districts. Weather officials have issued alerts for several regions as conditions remain favorable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. The changing weather pattern is expected to bring widespread showers and temporary relief from the intense summer heat affecting parts of the state.

According to the IMD’s meteorological center in Bengaluru, a trough extending from the central Bay of Bengal to Tamil Nadu is currently influencing weather conditions across southern India. The department stated that this system is likely to enhance rainfall activity across Karnataka during the coming week. The weather office has issued a heavy rain alert for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura, Kolar, and Ramanagara districts for May 22, warning of heavy thundershowers accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.

Rainfall was reported from several isolated locations across Karnataka during the previous 24 hours. Kadur in the Chikkamagaluru district recorded the highest rainfall at 5 centimeters, while Sira in Tumakuru and Thondebhavi in Chikkaballapura received 2 centimeters each. Light showers were also witnessed in parts of Bengaluru. Officials said the rainfall activity is likely to continue and expand across southern districts as moisture levels increase ahead of the southwest monsoon’s further progression.

The IMD said heavy rain and strong winds are expected to continue in South Interior Karnataka through the weekend. Tumakuru and Chitradurga districts are likely to receive intense rainfall on May 23, while Tumakuru, Mandya, and Hassan districts have been placed under a heavy rainfall warning for May 24. Other districts expected to witness rain and thunderstorms include Mysuru, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Hassan. Bengaluru City is forecast to receive generally light to moderate rain on May 23, followed by heavier spells over the subsequent 48 hours.

Northern districts such as Raichur, Koppal, Gadag, Bagalkote, Yadgir, and Kalaburagi are also expected to witness light to moderate rainfall along with gusty winds of up to 60 kmph over the next five days. However, the IMD noted that many parts of North Interior Karnataka may continue to experience relatively dry conditions despite isolated thunderstorm activity. Coastal districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada are also forecast to receive scattered rain and thundershowers until May 27.

Despite the onset of pre-monsoon showers, several northern parts of Karnataka continue to experience high temperatures. Bidar recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 41.8 degrees Celsius, while Kalaburagi registered 41.3 degrees Celsius. Weather experts said the upcoming rainfall could help moderate temperatures in some areas, though fluctuations are expected as the state transitions into the southwest monsoon season. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and strong winds, especially in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
