IMD Forecasts Heatwave Conditions Across Multiple Indian States For 4–5 Days

IMD warns of heatwave across north, central and east India for 4–5 days, with rainfall expected in northeast.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a warning that large parts of northwest, central, and eastern India are expected to experience intense heatwave conditions over the next four to five days, as temperatures continue to rise across several states. According to the latest IMD forecast, isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are likely to face heatwave conditions on April 24 and 25. Western Uttar Pradesh is expected to remain under similar conditions from April 23 to 25, while eastern Uttar Pradesh may experience heatwave conditions for a longer spell between April 22 and April 26. Rajasthan is also likely to be affected between April 24 and April 26.

The weather department further stated that Madhya Pradesh may see heatwave conditions from April 23 to 26. In central and eastern India, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are expected to be impacted between April 24 and April 27. Meanwhile, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand are likely to face brief heatwave spells on April 22 and 23 as the hot weather system expands across the region.

Alongside the heatwave warnings, the IMD has also cautioned about hot and humid conditions in several coastal and southern regions. These include Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, coastal Karnataka, and coastal Gujarat, where uncomfortable weather is expected between April 22 and April 25. The department has also indicated the possibility of warm night conditions in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Odisha, and the Konkan and Goa regions.

Despite the widespread heat across most of the country, the IMD has forecast some relief for northeastern India and parts of eastern India. These regions are expected to receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning throughout the week. The agency also warned of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall events in parts of the northeast during this period.

Meteorologists say the contrasting weather patterns—intense heat over the northern and central belt alongside rainfall in the northeast—are typical of transitional seasonal conditions. However, they also caution that prolonged heatwave spells could lead to increased health risks, especially for vulnerable populations, and advise precautionary measures during peak afternoon hours.
