IMD Forecasts Extended Heatwave Across Central And Northwest India For Several Days

IMD forecasts ongoing heatwave across central and northwest India with rainfall in other regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across parts of central and northwest India for the next several days, even as some regions prepare for relief later this week. The alert comes amid rising daytime temperatures that continue to affect large parts of the country during the pre-monsoon season.

According to the IMD, heatwave conditions are expected to remain intense over central India and northwestern states for the next 4–5 days. Similar conditions are also likely over eastern and adjoining peninsular regions for the next 3–4 days. The weather agency has cautioned that prolonged exposure to such high temperatures may increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable groups.

Officials said a gradual reduction in maximum temperatures and easing of heatwave conditions is expected from May 29 onwards. This improvement is likely across central India as well as adjoining northern peninsular, eastern and northwestern regions, although some pockets of Rajasthan may continue to experience high temperatures even beyond this period.

At the same time, the IMD has also forecast contrasting weather activity in other parts of the country. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Northeast India over the next 6–7 days, indicating active monsoon-related developments in the region. These conditions may bring localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruption in hilly and low-lying areas.

In addition, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall over the next 2–3 days. Meteorologists said these pre-monsoon showers are typical for this period but could intensify in certain pockets, requiring caution in coastal and interior regions.

Weather officials continue to monitor evolving conditions across the country as India transitions between extreme heat in the north and central regions and rainfall activity in the south and northeast. The IMD has advised citizens to stay updated with local forecasts and take necessary precautions amid rapidly changing weather patterns.
