IIT Kanpur Junior Technician Ends Life After Phone Argument With Fiancé

IIT Kanpur technician Anju Kumari dies by suicide after an argument with her fiancé.

A 28-year-old junior technician at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur allegedly died by suicide on Saturday inside campus accommodation following an argument with her fiancé, police said. The incident occurred within the institute premises and prompted an immediate response from local authorities. Officials confirmed that the case is being treated as an unnatural death pending further investigation. The tragic episode has drawn attention to the circumstances leading up to the incident. Police said they are proceeding cautiously while verifying all available evidence.

The deceased has been identified as Anju Kumari, a native of Jadugoda in Jharkhand. Authorities said she had been residing in Kanpur for the past three years in connection with her employment. She was working as a junior technician at IIT Kanpur and lived in staff housing on campus. Colleagues described her as a regular employee with no recent formal complaints on record. Officials are compiling her background details as part of the inquiry.

According to police, Anju was on a phone call with her fiancé, identified as Pankaj, when an argument reportedly broke out between the two. Investigators said the conversation turned tense shortly before the call ended. During the exchange, she allegedly told him that she would end her life before disconnecting. This statement is now a key part of the police investigation. Officers are verifying the exact sequence of the call through technical data.

Authorities said she was later found hanging in her room inside the campus accommodation. Local police were alerted soon after the discovery and rushed to the scene. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination. Preliminary findings suggest suicide, though officials stressed that the probe is still ongoing. The scene was examined for any additional evidence.

Investigators are reviewing call detail records and questioning the fiancé as well as colleagues to reconstruct the events leading up to the death. Police said no foul play has been confirmed at this stage of the investigation. Officials emphasised that conclusions will depend on forensic and medical reports. The case remains under active scrutiny by local authorities. Further updates are expected once the investigation progresses.
