IIT Bombay To Launch First Overseas Sub-Campus In New York From 2027
First overseas expansion begins with US campus in 2027.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced plans to establish its first-ever overseas sub-campus at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury, marking a significant milestone in the international expansion of Indian higher education. The proposed campus is expected to begin its first academic session in 2027 and aims to strengthen academic collaboration between India and the United States. The initiative will focus on engineering, multidisciplinary research, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and other emerging fields.
The announcement was made during a virtual meeting between IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare and SUNY Old Westbury President Timothy E. Sams in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The collaboration is based on a Letter of Intent signed by the two institutions to jointly develop educational and research opportunities at SUNY Old Westbury's Long Island campus. The partnership is expected to enhance academic exchanges and create new opportunities for students and researchers in both countries.
As part of the collaboration, IIT Bombay and SUNY Old Westbury will introduce undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes in science and engineering, with a strong emphasis on frontier technologies such as artificial intelligence. The institutions also plan to undertake joint research projects, facilitate faculty and researcher exchanges, and organise conferences and academic symposia. These initiatives are expected to promote innovation and strengthen global academic cooperation.

Welcoming the partnership, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described it as an important step in advancing India-US collaboration in higher education, research, and technology. He said the initiative would serve as a "living corridor of knowledge" between the two countries, creating mutually beneficial opportunities for students, academicians, and researchers while supporting the development of cutting-edge technologies. He also urged both institutions to nurture future-ready talent capable of addressing global challenges.
Professor Shireesh Kedare expressed confidence that the partnership would achieve significant success, citing the complementary strengths of both institutions. SUNY Old Westbury President Timothy E. Sams described IIT Bombay as a world-class institution and said the collaboration would enhance teaching, innovation, and excellence in disciplines such as physics and engineering. India's Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Kwatra, and Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi also welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to deepen bilateral cooperation in research, innovation, and higher education.
IIT Bombay is widely recognised as one of India's premier engineering institutions, known for its academic excellence, cutting-edge research, distinguished faculty, and strong industry partnerships. The establishment of its first overseas sub-campus represents a significant step in the institute's global outreach strategy and reflects India's growing presence in international higher education. The collaboration is expected to strengthen academic ties between India and the United States while providing students with expanded opportunities for world-class education and research.
