IDF Investigates Soldier After Damage To Jesus Statue In Southern Lebanon

IDF confirms soldier damaged Jesus statue in Lebanon, launches probe.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed the authenticity of a widely circulated photograph showing a soldier damaging a religious statue of Jesus Christ during military operations in southern Lebanon, and has described the act as “wholly inconsistent” with its values.

The image, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, appears to show an Israeli soldier striking or damaging the head of a Jesus Christ statue. The photograph was reportedly taken during ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, where forces are engaged in actions targeting Hezbollah infrastructure.

In an official statement released on Monday, the IDF said that an initial internal review confirmed the image was genuine and that it depicts an IDF soldier operating in southern Lebanon. The military expressed serious concern over the incident, stating that the behaviour shown in the photograph does not align with the standards expected of its personnel.

The IDF further said that the matter has been escalated through its chain of command and referred to the Northern Command for further investigation and disciplinary review. While the army acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, it did not immediately specify what disciplinary measures the soldier may face.

Authorities also stated that efforts would be made to restore the damaged religious symbol. The IDF said it is working to assist the local community in repairing and returning the statue to its original place, emphasising that it does not intend to harm civilian infrastructure, including religious sites or symbols.

The incident comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, which the IDF says are aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. The episode has drawn attention online due to the sensitive nature of religious symbolism in conflict zones and has prompted further scrutiny of conduct during active operations.
