IAS Officer Rahul Bansal Faces Rs 1 Crore Bribery Allegation, Old Video Resurfaces

A mock interview video featuring IPS officer Rahul Bansal has resurfaced online after allegations emerged that he accepted a Rs 1 crore bribe during his first field posting. The Chhattisgarh-cadre officer is facing serious corruption allegations, although the claims have not been established. The old video, recorded during Bansal’s civil services preparation, has drawn renewed attention because of his strong comments against bribery and corruption made before he entered public service.

In the interview, Bansal spoke about governance, administrative reforms and the challenges faced by public institutions. He also recalled an incident involving his brother, who was then studying at IIT Kanpur and needed a birth certificate urgently before travelling to the United States to present a research paper. According to Bansal, a panchayat official demanded Rs 500 for issuing the document quickly. Bansal said he felt “very bad” about paying the bribe, a remark that has now gained significance following the allegations against him.

Bansal had also discussed the broader problem of corruption in government institutions during the mock interview. While acknowledging that corruption and inefficiency existed within the system, he reportedly argued that it would be unfair to judge all government officials based on the actions of a few individuals. He also spoke about the need for police reforms and improved public service delivery, presenting an approach centred on accountability and better governance.

Years after the interview was recorded, the remarks have resurfaced as Bansal faces allegations of accepting a Rs 1 crore bribe during his first field posting. The contrast between his earlier reaction to a Rs 500 bribe and the much larger amount involved in the current allegations has prompted widespread discussion online. Social media users have been sharing portions of the old interview while questioning the apparent difference between the principles he expressed as a civil services aspirant and the allegations now surrounding his conduct as an officer.

The resurfaced video has also renewed debate over integrity in public service and the expectations placed on civil servants. Candidates appearing for the civil services examination often speak about combating corruption, improving governance and strengthening public institutions. Allegations involving serving or former officials can therefore attract significant public attention because civil servants are entrusted with administrative authority and are expected to uphold standards of transparency and accountability.

However, the allegations against Bansal remain allegations and cannot be treated as established facts unless proved through due legal or investigative proceedings. The old interview, while providing context to the current controversy, does not by itself establish any wrongdoing. As the matter develops, scrutiny is likely to remain focused on the corruption allegations, the evidence gathered by investigating agencies and the eventual outcome of the proceedings. For now, the resurfaced comments have placed Bansal’s earlier views on corruption back in the public spotlight.
