IAF Advances Phase-III Upgrade of IACCS, Boosting Long-Range Precision Strike Capabilities

Indian Air Force modernizes IACCS for beyond visual range threats.

The Indian Air Force is actively progressing through the third phase of comprehensive upgrades to its Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), a sophisticated platform that functioned as the primary nerve center coordinating both offensive strikes and defensive measures during the high-intensity Operation Sindoor conducted earlier in 2025 against Pakistan-based terrorist infrastructure.

This latest modernization initiative places significant emphasis on enhancing long-range vectoring capabilities, strengthening network-centric warfare operations, and enabling precision strikes from extended distances, with a strategic priority on mastering beyond visual range (BVR) combat scenarios to effectively neutralize threats launched from standoff positions well outside traditional engagement zones.

Incorporating advanced threat evaluation modules at various IACCS nodes, the upgraded system now automatically prioritizes incoming targets by analyzing detailed intelligence profiles and real-time data, complementing the existing standoff weapon launch detection mechanisms that allow for swift identification and countermeasures against attacks initiated from safe enemy distances.

Originally conceptualized in 1995 in response to the Purulia arms drop incident and subsequently embedded within the IAF's foundational air power doctrine—revised most recently in 2022—the IACCS has evolved to include software-defined radios for encrypted voice and data communications, alongside specialized detection protocols for unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, and loitering munitions employed in suppressing enemy air defenses.

Built on a forward-thinking physical and network architecture that anticipates future technological advancements, the IACCS facilitates seamless integration with the Indian Army's Akashtir air defense control and reporting system as well as the Navy's Trigun maritime domain awareness platform, promoting joint tri-service operations while aligning with the Ministry of Defence's declaration of 2025 as the Year of Reforms to accelerate military modernization efforts.
