Hyderabad’s Minimum Temperature Falls 4.5°C Below Normal, IMD Predicts Ongoing Cold Wave

Hyderabad records 4.5°C below-normal temperature as cold wave continues; IMD predicts dry week with advisories.

Telangana woke up to biting cold on Thursday morning as minimum temperatures plunged well below normal, with Hyderabad recording a sharp 4.5°C dip below the seasonal average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad confirmed that cold wave conditions, already prevalent across isolated pockets on Wednesday, are likely to persist through November 20, prompting residents to light bonfires and pull out woollens earlier than usual.

Several districts registered “markedly below normal” minimums of 5.1°C or more below average, with Adilabad touching a chilly 8.2°C and Ramagundam 9.1°C. In Hyderabad, the city’s minimum settled at 13.8°C—a full 4.5°C colder than normal for mid-November—while the maximum is expected to hover around 29-30°C under clear skies. The IMD has forecast predominantly dry weather across Telangana for the next 48 hours, offering no immediate relief from the cold.

The sudden chill is being driven by clear night skies and calm winds allowing rapid radiative cooling, combined with cold northerly winds flowing in from northern India. The Met department has issued advisories urging farmers to protect standing crops, particularly vegetables and horticulture, from frost and advising livestock owners to provide shelter and extra feed to animals during the cold wave spell.

While scattered light rainfall is possible in a few northern and eastern districts between November 22 and 25 due to a weak western disturbance, the overall dry and chilly pattern is expected to dominate the state through the weekend. Hyderabad’s night temperatures are likely to remain 3-4°C below normal at least until November 23, making this one of the earliest cold waves in recent years for the Deccan plateau region.
