Hyderabad Monsoon Arrives With A Deadly Warning: Two Dead, Roads Paralysed For Hours
Two electrocuted and roads paralysed as monsoon rains batter Hyderabad on Tuesday.
At least two people were killed in Hyderabad after heavy rainfall triggered severe waterlogging and widespread traffic disruption across the city, with commuters reporting travel delays of nearly two hours to cover just five kilometres in several key corridors. The incident comes as the southwest monsoon intensifies over Telangana, bringing intense showers, strong winds and hazardous urban flooding conditions.
According to officials, the fatalities were reported from the Old City’s Bandlaguda area near Mylardevpally, where strong winds are believed to have caused live electric wires to snap from a pole. The cables fell into a waterlogged street, and two youths reportedly stepped out of an auto-rickshaw and came into contact with the submerged live wire, resulting in electrocution.
Emergency teams rushed to the spot soon after the incident, while civic authorities were urged to carry out urgent inspections of vulnerable electrical infrastructure to prevent further tragedies. The deaths have raised fresh concerns over urban safety during monsoon conditions, particularly in low-lying areas where flooding and exposed wiring often create high-risk situations.

In the aftermath, local MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi visited the bereaved families and expressed condolences, assuring them that he would take up the matter with relevant authorities to ensure swift action and support. Officials have also been instructed to intensify monitoring of electrical installations across flood-prone zones in the city.
Meanwhile, the heavy downpour brought Hyderabad’s transport network to a near standstill, with major roads submerged and residential colonies inundated. Motorists were stranded for hours, while social media users shared videos and accounts of extreme congestion, including long delays on routes such as Jubilee Hills Checkpost and surrounding areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings indicating that monsoon activity is likely to intensify further across Telangana in the coming days. Several districts have been placed under a yellow alert, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning activity and gusty winds, prompting authorities to urge residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather conditions.
