Humayun Kabir’s Son Held After Alleged Assault on Policeman in Shaktipur

Humayun Kabir’s son was detained after allegedly slapping an on-duty policeman during a security dispute.

Gulam Nabi Azad, son of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chairperson and suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, was detained by police on December 28, 2025, for allegedly assaulting an on-duty constable assigned to his father's security detail. The incident occurred at Kabir's residence in Shaktipur, where a case has been registered against Azad based on a complaint filed by the constable. Police sources stated that Azad allegedly slapped and abused the officer after the latter requested leave, leading to a heated argument.

The altercation reportedly took place in the morning during a meeting at Kabir's MLA office, attended by the MLA, his son, and several party workers. According to police, when the constable approached Humayun Kabir to seek permission for leave, the request was denied, escalating into a confrontation. Azad is said to have intervened physically, slapping the constable in front of witnesses. Following the complaint, officers from Shaktipur police station arrived at the residence, briefly questioned Azad, and took him into custody for further interrogation.

Humayun Kabir, who was not present at home during the initial detention, later reached Shaktipur police station after learning of his son's arrest. In a strong reaction, Kabir alleged that the constable had attempted to assault him and that his son had merely acted in self-defense to protect him. Claiming to possess CCTV footage of the incident, Kabir accused the officer of prior misconduct and threatened to organize a gherao (protest siege) of the Superintendent of Police's office on the coming Thursday at 12 pm. "The security guard had entered my room and tried to beat me up. My son pushed him out of the room," Kabir said, adding that he had previously lodged a complaint against the same constable.

The episode comes at a politically sensitive time for Humayun Kabir, who recently launched the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) after his suspension from the Trinamool Congress. His suspension followed a controversial proposal to construct a mosque in Murshidabad styled after the Babri Masjid. JUP has positioned itself as an alternative aimed at capturing the Muslim vote bank traditionally aligned with the Trinamool, with Kabir boldly claiming his party will contest all 182 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections and emerge as a kingmaker.

The detention of his son has added fuel to the controversy, with Kabir framing it as an attempt to target him politically. Police have maintained that the action was taken strictly on the basis of the constable's complaint and eyewitness accounts. The matter is under investigation, and further developments are awaited as tensions rise ahead of the 2026 state polls.
