Honour Killing in UP: Father and Minor Son Shoot Teenage Daughter

In a chilling case of suspected honour killing, a 17-year-old girl was shot dead by her father and younger brother in Ambehta village, Shamli district, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday evening. The victim, Muskan, a Class 12 student, was allegedly lured to the upper floor of their home by her father, Julfam, and 15-year-old brother, where they executed her with a pistol. Shamli Superintendent of Police N. P. Singh confirmed the arrests of both accused, along with the recovery of the murder weapon, underscoring the swift police response to the familial violence.

An FIR has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, India's updated criminal code, against Julfam and his minor son. During interrogation, Julfam confessed to the crime, citing Muskan's alleged tarnishing of the family's reputation as the motive. According to preliminary investigations and local accounts, Muskan had been in a relationship with a local boy, which her family vehemently opposed. The fatal confrontation erupted when Julfam caught her chatting on the phone that evening, triggering the deadly assault. Muskan's body was promptly sent for post-mortem examination to ascertain further details, with police ruling out any external involvement at this stage.

This incident highlights the persistent scourge of honour killings in Uttar Pradesh, a state with deep-rooted patriarchal norms and caste sensitivities that often escalate personal relationships into lethal conflicts. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau indicates that Uttar Pradesh reported over 50 such cases in 2024 alone, frequently involving familial perpetrators targeting young women for defying marriage conventions or inter-caste alliances. High-profile precedents, like the 2007 Manoj-Babli case in Haryana, have led to landmark convictions and Supreme Court interventions, yet enforcement remains uneven. In 2023, the apex court issued stern warnings against such vigilantism, emphasising that "honour killings" undermine constitutional rights and societal progress.
