Himanta Sarma Promises to Rebuild Worst-Hit Assam Flood Villages

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the state government will move beyond immediate flood relief and focus on the long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction of some of the worst-affected villages in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts. The announcement came after the Chief Minister conducted an on-ground assessment of the flood-hit areas, where he witnessed extensive damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure. He said rebuilding devastated villages would be a priority to help affected families restore their livelihoods.

During his visit, Sarma travelled to several flood-affected locations, including Nepalikhuti, where damaged roads forced him to use a tractor to reach residents. He interacted with families who described the destruction caused by the floods, the loss of homes and belongings, and the financial difficulties they now face. Responding to their concerns, the Chief Minister assured them that the government would remain committed to both immediate relief measures and long-term rehabilitation efforts.

Speaking after inspecting the affected areas, Sarma said the devastation in Sivasagar and neighbouring Charaideo was far more severe than what had been visible through television coverage. He emphasised that relief alone would not be sufficient in the worst-hit regions and announced plans to rebuild entire villages where the destruction was extensive. According to the Chief Minister, villages in Bihubor, Nepalikhuti, Betbari and Nimaichan have been identified as priorities for reconstruction under the government's rehabilitation programme.

The Chief Minister also announced that the first instalment of interim financial assistance has already been credited directly to the bank accounts of more than 75,000 flood-affected families. Each eligible household has received Rs 15,000 to address immediate needs and begin repairing damaged homes. In addition, the Assam government has released its share of financial assistance under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with more than Rs 160 crore transferred directly to eligible beneficiaries across flood-affected districts.

Sarma said officials would carry out detailed assessments of property and infrastructure damage before determining the final compensation for affected families. He further announced that severely impacted households in Sivasagar and Charaideo would receive an additional Rs 10,000 within the next few days. Apart from these two districts, eligible beneficiaries in Jorhat and Golaghat have also received the state's financial contribution under the PM Surya Ghar scheme as part of the broader relief package.

Reiterating the government's commitment to recovery, the Chief Minister said his visit was intended to personally review the ground situation and ensure that relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts progress without unnecessary delays. He assured residents that the state government would continue supporting flood-affected families until normalcy is restored, while emphasising that rebuilding damaged communities would remain a key priority in the months ahead.
