Himachal Governor Kavinder Gupta Launches Strict Fuel Conservation Measures

Himachal Governor announces fuel-saving steps, cuts convoy, stops helicopter use.

Kavinder Gupta has announced a series of fuel conservation and administrative austerity measures aimed at reducing government fuel consumption and promoting energy efficiency across the state. The announcement was made at Lok Bhawan, where the Governor outlined steps intended to support broader national efforts toward resource conservation amid rising global energy concerns.

As part of the new measures, the Governor said he will no longer use the state government helicopter for official travel until global fuel prices stabilise. He also directed that the size of his official convoy be reduced by half, signalling a shift toward more restrained and efficient use of government transport resources. Officials confirmed that non-essential meetings will now be conducted through video conferencing to minimise unnecessary travel.

Lok Bhawan has been designated as a “Fuel Conservation Zone,” where energy-efficient practices will be actively promoted. The Governor further announced the introduction of “Petrol-Free Sundays,” under which no official vehicles will consume fuel for government work on Sundays. Instead, all official engagements scheduled for that day will be handled through virtual meetings or consolidated travel arrangements.

The initiative also extends to educational institutions across the state. As the Chancellor of state universities, Gupta urged Vice Chancellors to promote fuel-saving habits on campuses, including carpooling, cycling, and the use of public transport. He called on universities to institutionalise energy conservation practices and encourage students to adopt sustainable commuting habits as part of daily life.

In his appeal to citizens, the Governor emphasised that fuel conservation should be seen as a shared national responsibility. He encouraged people, especially youth, to reduce reliance on private vehicles, adopt public transport, and support local goods and services under the “Vocal for Local” initiative. He also highlighted Himachal Pradesh’s tourism potential, urging residents to prioritise domestic travel, noting that supporting local destinations strengthens the state’s economy and employment opportunities.

The measures come in the backdrop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader call for austerity and reduced fuel dependency amid global energy uncertainty and volatility in crude oil markets. State officials said the initiatives are intended to position Himachal Pradesh as a model for responsible governance and sustainable energy use.
