High Court Grants Interim Relief to Vellappally Natesan; Stays Disqualification Order

Kerala High Court stays order removing Natesan as SNDP general secretary.

The Kerala High Court has stayed the operation of a lower court judgment that had ordered the removal of Vellappally Natesan from the post of General Secretary of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, granting interim relief to the veteran leader and allowing him to continue in office for the time being. The interim order was passed while the High Court considered an appeal filed against the earlier ruling, which had raised questions over the legality of Natesan’s continuation as general secretary. By staying the judgment, the court has effectively put on hold the implementation of the lower court’s directive until a detailed examination of the case is completed.

The dispute relates to internal disagreements and legal challenges within the SNDP Yogam, a prominent socio-religious organisation representing the Ezhava community in Kerala. The earlier decision had reportedly stemmed from petitions challenging procedural aspects of leadership tenure and governance within the organisation. The ruling had directed Natesan’s removal, triggering a legal battle that quickly escalated to the High Court.

During the hearing, counsel representing Natesan argued that the lower court’s judgment suffered from legal infirmities and required reconsideration. They contended that the order could cause disruption to the functioning of the organisation if implemented immediately. The High Court, after hearing preliminary submissions, found sufficient grounds to grant an interim stay, ensuring that the status quo is maintained until further orders.

Legal observers note that such interim relief is typically granted to prevent administrative instability while a higher court reviews contested rulings. In this case, the stay ensures continuity in the leadership of the SNDP Yogam, which has a wide organisational network and plays an influential role in Kerala’s socio-political landscape. Any abrupt change in its leadership could have broader implications for its functioning and affiliated institutions.

The SNDP Yogam, founded on the teachings of social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, has historically been at the forefront of social reform movements in Kerala. Over the decades, it has evolved into a powerful community organisation with a significant presence in education, social welfare, and public life. Leadership issues within the Yogam often attract attention due to its prominence and the stature of its office-bearers.

The High Court is expected to take up the matter for detailed hearing in the coming weeks, during which it will examine the legal validity of the lower court’s ruling as well as the arguments presented by both sides. Until a final decision is reached, the interim stay provides temporary relief to Natesan and ensures that the organisation continues to function without immediate leadership changes.
