Heavy Snowfall In Japan Claims At Least 30 Lives Since Late January
Unusually heavy snowfall since late January has led to 30 deaths, over 100 serious injuries, and military aid in hardest-hit northern regions.
Record-breaking snowfall across large parts of Japan has claimed at least 30 lives, disrupted transport networks, and forced authorities to issue emergency advisories as the country grapples with one of its harshest winter spells in years.
According to Japanese media reports and local authorities, heavy snow has battered regions along the Sea of Japan coast as well as parts of central and northern Japan. The fatalities have been linked to incidents such as roof collapses, avalanches, traffic accidents, and people falling while clearing snow from rooftops — a common but dangerous winter activity in snow-prone areas.
Several prefectures have reported snowfall far exceeding seasonal averages, with some areas recording their deepest snow cover in decades. Continuous snow accumulation has led to blocked roads, stranded vehicles, and widespread disruptions to rail and air services. Authorities have warned that conditions remain hazardous as freezing temperatures persist.

Emergency services have been placed on high alert, and local governments have urged residents, especially the elderly, to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. Officials have also cautioned against working alone while removing snow from roofs, after multiple deaths were reported during such efforts.
The extreme weather has also impacted daily life and commerce, with schools closed in some regions and supply chains facing delays. Power outages were reported in isolated areas, while municipalities scrambled to deploy snowploughs and relief teams to affected communities.
Meteorological officials said the severe snowfall was driven by strong cold air masses colliding with moisture-laden winds, a pattern common in winter but unusually intense this season. Authorities have warned that further snowfall is possible and have advised residents to stay informed, take precautions, and follow safety advisories as Japan continues to battle the deadly winter conditions.
