Heavy Rainfall to Batter 7 Odisha Districts as Deep Depression Approaches Coast
Heavy rains and deep depression threaten Odisha’s coast.
Torrential rains battered Odisha on Thursday, October 2, 2025, as a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal barreled toward the coast, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for seven districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm. The state is on high alert as the system, moving north-northwest at 13 kmph, is expected to make landfall between Gopalpur and Paradip by Thursday night, bringing potential devastation.
The IMD’s red alert covers Puri, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal, where isolated areas could see catastrophic downpours until 8:30 AM Friday. An orange alert, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm), has been issued for 16 districts: Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, and Kendrapara. Seven western districts are under a yellow alert, expecting 7-11 cm of rain.
Manorama Mohanty, director of the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, reported that the deep depression, centered 160 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 200 km south of Puri at 8:30 AM, is fueling squally winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, over the central and north Bay of Bengal. These winds are expected to weaken after landfall. The IMD has hoisted Local Cautionary Signal No-III (LC-3) at all Odisha ports and advised fishermen to avoid the sea until October 3 due to hazardous conditions.

The state government has mobilized response teams and equipment in vulnerable districts to manage potential flooding and disruptions. Reports of landslides in Gajapati district have already surfaced, raising concerns about further damage as the rains intensify. The deep depression, a precursor to a potential cyclonic storm, follows a well-marked low-pressure system and is driving Odisha’s extreme weather, according to meteorologists.
Odisha’s coastal and southern regions have been hit hardest, with heavy rainfall since Wednesday disrupting daily life and threatening infrastructure. The government is urging residents to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols as the state braces for the system’s impact. With the deep depression nearing landfall, authorities are preparing for possible evacuations and relief operations to mitigate the risks of flooding, landslides, and wind damage across the affected regions.
