Heavy Rain Warning for 3 Districts as Tamil Nadu Braces for More Showers

Tamil Nadu set for more showers as cyclone effect lingers.

Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts resumed classes on Friday after remaining closed for three consecutive days due to heavy rainfall triggered by the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah. The cyclone, which earlier struck Sri Lanka and Indonesia, weakened into a deep depression upon nearing the Tamil Nadu coast but still delivered widespread downpours, causing significant waterlogging in low-lying areas and on several educational campuses across the state.

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has stated that although the deep depression has further weakened and moved inland, a persistent low-level circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea continues to channel moisture toward Tamil Nadu. This system is expected to sustain light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at several places across the state, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next few days.

Heavy rainfall has been specifically forecast at isolated locations in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts on Friday, placing these southern districts under close watch. Local administration and disaster response teams have been alerted to monitor vulnerable areas prone to flash flooding and overflow of water bodies.

In the state capital, Chennai will experience a partly cloudy sky with possibilities of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some parts. The maximum temperature is likely to settle between 28-29°C, while the minimum will hover around 24-25°C. Most previously affected low-lying areas have reported receding water levels.

As of Friday morning, no fresh holiday declarations have been issued for educational institutions in any district. District Collectors retain the authority to announce sudden closures if weather conditions deteriorate rapidly, and parents and students are urged to stay updated through official government channels for real-time information.
