Heavy Rain Forecast Triggers High Alert Across Uttarakhand For Next 24 Hours

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday directed all concerned departments to remain on high alert amid continuous rainfall and a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about heavy showers in several parts of the state over the next 24 hours. The chief minister instructed officials to ensure close coordination between agencies and remain prepared for any emergency situation arising due to adverse weather conditions. Dhami reviewed the state's preparedness with Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Vinod Kumar Suman and assessed the situation following the ongoing rainfall.

During the meeting, he directed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), district administrations, police, fire services, health departments and other emergency agencies to maintain constant coordination to ensure quick response during rescue and relief operations. The chief minister instructed district magistrates to remain alert around the clock and continuously monitor vulnerable areas, including locations prone to landslides, flash floods and waterlogging. He also asked officials to closely track water levels in rivers and streams and take preventive measures whenever required to minimise risks to residents and infrastructure.

Dhami further directed authorities to immediately relocate people living in vulnerable areas to safer locations if the situation demands. The instructions come as several parts of Uttarakhand continue to experience rainfall-related challenges during the monsoon season, with hilly terrain increasing the risk of landslides and sudden rises in water levels in rivers and streams. According to Vinod Kumar Suman, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Dehradun, Chamoli and Bageshwar districts for Thursday. A yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts of the state, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to remain cautious and follow weather advisories issued by officials. Uttarakhand is particularly vulnerable to weather-related disasters during the monsoon due to its mountainous landscape, where intense rainfall can quickly trigger landslides, road blockages and flash floods. Every year, state authorities strengthen preparedness measures during the rainy season to protect residents, pilgrims and visitors travelling through the Himalayan region. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, with disaster management agencies prepared to intervene if conditions worsen.

Officials are also monitoring major rivers and streams as rainfall continues across different parts of the state. The administration has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas and remain updated through official alerts. With the IMD forecasting heavy rainfall in multiple districts, the Uttarakhand government has emphasised preventive action rather than waiting for emergencies to occur. Authorities are focusing on early warnings, rapid evacuation plans and coordinated response mechanisms to reduce the impact of potential weather-related incidents across the state.
