Heavy Rain Alert for Chennai as Easterly Trough Intensifies

Trough of easterlies expected to bring heavy showers to Chennai and nearby districts today.

Chennai and its surrounding areas are bracing for heavy rainfall on Saturday due to a trough of easterlies positioned close to the Tamil Nadu coast over the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a forecast warning of intense downpours in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts. Other regions likely to experience heavy rain include Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.

The system has already triggered sporadic showers across parts of the city on Friday, with dark clouds looming over areas like St Thomas Mount, where labourers continued Metro Rail construction work under overcast skies. Meteorologists attribute the wet spell directly to this easterly trough, which is channeling moisture toward northern Tamil Nadu and the coastal belt.

While Saturday is set to be the wettest day in the immediate forecast, light to moderate rain is expected to continue on Sunday and Monday. Dry weather is likely to return from January 27 to January 29, offering a brief respite. Chennai’s maximum temperature on Saturday is predicted to hover around 28°C, with the minimum dipping to 22°C, making conditions feel cooler and more humid amid the showers.

Residents are advised to watch for waterlogging in low-lying areas, exercise caution on roads, and stay updated with official alerts from the India Meteorological Department. The onset of this rain spell marks a notable shift after relatively dry conditions in recent weeks, highlighting the influence of Bay of Bengal weather systems on Chennai’s January weather pattern.
